A Major Difference in Marching

The difference between major and minor chords and scales boils down to a difference of one essential note – the third. The third is what gives major-sounding scales and chords their brighter, cheerier sound, and what gives minor scales and chords their darker, sadder sound.

If the Imperial March is played in a major key, then it sounds almost comical. Take a listen.

  1. Ha! I love this. It reminds me of the march from Indiana Jones. Maybe John Williams was having trouble coming up with music ideas for Raiders of the Lost Ark and thought – “Hey! I wonder what the Imperial March sounds like in a major key?”
