Tie Fighter Swarm

My first Escalation Tournament – Report

Hello everyone! (Sorry for my English…)

I went to my very first Escalation Tournament this last weekend and I wanted to report my day. First of all, it is a very fun and interesting format. The thing about increasing the size and strength of your build after each match is thrilling.

The tournament was local, so I knew all the people that attended the event. I also knew there are more Empire players than Rebel players and they pretty much all dislike the Fat-Falcon. So, since I love Echo so much and probably no Fat-Falcon on the horizon, I decided to focus on Echo and build my squad around her. Here is the list I ran.

59 pts

Echo 1

– Veteran Instincts

2 X Academy Pilot

So, basically, it’s 1 really good flanker with a mini swarm, then 2 good flankers with a swarm. It should be good vs. almost anything. Or so I figured…

Round 1

Eric with:

e-wing-5-etahn-abaht

a-wing-1-prototype-pilota-wing-chardaan-refit

z-95-4-tala-squadron-pilot

Etan

Prototype Pilot

-Chardaan

Tala

When I saw his list, I told myself: Ohhh this will be easy. My Echo will eat them all.

First of all, I’m not a guy who believes in luck (roll dice). I believe more in making your own luck, by doing the right maneuver, having a good plan, placing the asteroids at the right places and taking the right actions (or denying action for the opponent). I have never said I won or lost a game because of bad dice…

So, in this match, I fly my ships almost perfectly (in my opinion). I was always arc dodging with Echo. My first attack roll with her went 4 blanks… Oh well, it happens! But then, Ethan shot at an AP at range 3. He gets 2 hits and a crit. I roll 4 green dice with a focus… and roll 4 blanks! Oh well, it happens… but twice? Next round, I position Echo at range 1 of Ethan, out of his arc with a focus and roll… 4 blanks and a hit! 3 times now!!! And of course, he evaded that hit. It goes like this the entire match. I got 9/10 blanks on all my dice. Never saw that before!

I played near 100 games of X-Wing and it was the worst game ever for blank rolls. Eric managed to even kill a cloaked/focused Echo at range 3 with his Tala, 2 hits vs. 5 blanks on my evade dice. Anyway, I lost that game 60-0. I didn’t kill a thing! The God of Dice hated me for this match… Oh well, it happens!?

Round 2

Max with:

Wedge Antilles X-Wing Card
Wedge Antilles X-Wing Card

b-wing-7-keyan-farlanderelite-outmaneuver

Biggs Darklighter X-Wing Card
astromech-r2-d2 Biggs Darklighter X-Wing Card

Wedge

Keyan Farlander

– Outmaneuver

Biggs

– R2-D2

This match went quickly. I did a pincer attack with Echo on one side (flank) and my mini swarm on the other. I killed his B-Wing in 2 rounds (too far from Biggs), then Biggs and then Wedge. And poor him, he didn’t land a single hit. I sensed a little compassion from the God of Dice from my previous match.

Round 3

William with:

Echo 3

soontir 2

Omg + Vader

Academies

“Echo”

-Veteran Instincts

-Fire-Control System

-Weapons Engineer

-Advanced Cloaking Device

Soontir Fel

-Push the Limit

-Targeting Computer

Omicron

-Darth Vader

Academy Pilot x 2

His squad was very similar to mine so I expected the game to be very interesting. He won the initiative and it served him well. William is a new player to our group, he’s been with us for about 2-3 months now. His skills have increased very fast,  he learns fast but, I didn’t expect him to learn that fast… All I can remember of this game was that he flew his squad so well, always blocking Soontir and shooting at Echo before I can cloak back. I also flew my squad so badly…

I was very afraid of his Doom Shuttle, so I decided to go after it with my 4 AP. It didn’t go well as he managed to block all of them with his 2 AP (no action for my 4 AP). Long story short, I think I killed his 2 AP and his shuttle and he killed all of my ships. That game was very frustrating, but I was also very happy for William, as he gets even better and brings more challenging play to our group. I even think it was the first time he beat me! That’s probably why he was wearing a smile on his face.

Round 4

Philippe with:

Rexler

kagi wtf

Turrcarnor

Rexler

– VI

– HLC

– Stealth

Kagi

– Ion Canon

– Advanced sensors

– Rebel Captive

– Tactician

– Engine Upgrade

Carnor

– PTL

– Stealth

Turr

– VI

– TC

So he brought 4 super loaded high PS Imperials ships. He won the initiative, and that meant all his 4 ships can shoot at Echo before she can cloak back. That’s a hard match up. But in this match, not having the initiative helped me out since I knew where he was. I decided to use Echo as bait.

As planned he began by chasing Echo with his shuttle, trying to stress her with tactician and/or with rebel captive if I shot back. He was never able to catch her before turn 3. That prevented Echo from entering the combat for those first 3 turns and lured his shuttle away. However, that put my 7 ships vs. his 3 remaining ships. I concentrated my fire on his defender first (I think I managed to bring him down in 1 or 2 turns). Then, I just went after his ships one at a time. The dice were ok on both sides, but since I had 8 ships and he had 4, the numbers were in my favour. He managed to kill 4 AP before I obliterated him.

Conclusion

So, I got 2 wins and 2 loses and ended up 5th out of 12. Not bad, but not good (if it wasn’t for that 1st game!!!). I still believe my build was strong, but in the end, I got one unlucky match (can’t believe I said that!) and one who my opponent flew better than me.

Looking back I think that the Escalation mode is incredible. Getting your squad stronger every round is exciting. If you have a chance to attend to that king of events, go for it!

Well that’s it! Thanks for reading!

  1. Nice report Remi. I know what you mean about dice, in every loss I can always see things I might have done better, but there are a few times that I can think of where dice really did decide the game. Sometimes hot dice can even get you out of dumb moves! C’est la vie mon ami.

I’ve only played escalation once and it was a lot of fun. After reading your post I want to try it again.
